Pure culture studies demonstrate a strictly anaerobic, fermentatative metabolism, where the major end products of glucose fermentation are acetate, formate and sometimes lactate 1 4. Sugars including glucose, fructose and maltose, are utilised as sole sources of carbon for growth 1 3. The genomes of all Romboutsia strains indicate that carbohydrate fermentation occurs via glycolysis and that the non oxidative pentose phosphate pathway is also present 4. Romboutsia may be potential acetogens, as the genomes of all Romboutsia strains possess the genes encoding the enzymes involved in the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway, and the presence of formate dehydrogenase has been predicted in all strains but R. ileas CRIB 4. No relevant in situ data has been determined for Romboutsia. Rod shaped cells may be straight or slightly curved, often forming chains of unspecified length 1 3.
